Therapy that makes room for your family and your own voice

Sonder is a three-therapist practice for South Asian adults and families. Between us we work in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi and Urdu, in person on Oak Tree Road or by video.

Who we see

Who Sonder is for

Sonder sees adults, 18 and over, and families that include adults. It is not an emergency service.

  • Between two sets of expectations

You grew up in one home and live in another world. You want to be a good son, daughter or partner, and still decide some things for yourself.

  • Couples in a crowded household

Two partners, and the parents, siblings and in-laws who share the decisions, the calendar and sometimes the roof.

  • Parents and grown children

A parent who wants to understand a grown child, or a grown child who wants to be understood. Together in one room, or each on your own.

Therapy at Sonder

Three ways to begin

Each begins with one conversation, in the language you would use at your own kitchen table.

  • Weekly or every other week, for 50 minutes, with one of our three therapists. A room that needs no explaining.

  • For two partners, in 80-minute sessions, including partners who come from different families and different customs.

  • A parent and a grown child, siblings, or three generations. You decide who joins and what is on the table.

  3. 03

    Step 3: You meet

Your first session is 50 minutes, in person on Oak Tree Road or by video. You decide who comes with you, if anyone.

Languages

Languages spoken in the room

Choose a therapist by the language you would use at home. If yours is missing, ask us before you book, and we will say plainly whether we can offer it.

How fees work

The answers to what nearly everyone asks before a first session.

  • Insurance we work with

We bill some commercial plans, such as PPO and EPO plans. Which ones depends on the clinician you see, and we tell you before your first session whether we are in network with yours. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid. If you need a clinician who does, we will gladly give you names.

    • Some commercial plans, by clinician

    • No Medicare or Medicaid

  • If you pay yourself

If you do not use insurance, you pay at the end of each session by card, including HSA and FSA cards. Your fee is given to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots may be open; ask how to request one. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) to send to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it pays anything, so ask it before you begin.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

Before the first session we check whether your plan covers outpatient mental health visits with the clinician you will see, and we tell you what we find. We cannot promise what a plan will pay.

Therapy and family honor

Your family comes into the room only when you invite it

Many of our clients love their families and want to stay close to them. Therapy here does not ask you to pick a side.

You can speak about a parent with respect and still say what is hard. You can ask for a family session, or never ask for one. We read the room with you, in your language, and we go at your pace.

  • You decide who joins

A parent, partner or sibling comes only if you ask, and you can change your mind.

  • What you say stays here

We do not report to your family, with the limits the law sets, explained in writing.

  • Nobody is asked to choose

Duty and your own wishes can both be said out loud.

Questions

What people ask us first

Do you take my insurance?

We bill some commercial plans, such as PPO and EPO plans, and which ones depends on the clinician you see. Write to us with your plan type and we will tell you before your first session whether we are in network. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid.

Which languages can I use in session?

Between us we work in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi and Urdu. Each therapist's languages are listed beside their name. If yours is missing, ask us before you book and we will say plainly whether we can offer it.

Will my family know what I say?

No. What you say in your own sessions is private, with the limits the law sets, which we explain in writing before you start. We do not report to a parent, a partner or an in-law, even one who pays for the sessions.

Can a parent, partner or in-law join a session?

Yes, if you want them to, and only then. Some people invite a family member for one session and some never do. We talk it through with you first, and you can change your mind.

What happens in the first session?

You meet your clinician for 50 minutes. You talk about what you would like from therapy, and your clinician explains how they work, how privacy works and what the next steps are. You are not asked to tell your whole story at once.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
