Questions
Frequently asked questions
If yours is not here, write to us and we will answer it.
Do you take my insurance?
We bill some commercial plans, such as PPO and EPO plans, and which ones depends on the clinician you see. Write to us with your plan type and we will tell you before your first session whether we are in network. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid.
Can I get a receipt to send to my plan?
Yes. Each month we give you an itemized receipt with the dates and kind of session, which your plan may accept as a superbill for out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see, and your plan decides whether it pays anything.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
How do fees work?
Your fee is given to you in writing before you start, and you pay at the end of each session by card. The page on how fees work walks through insurance, receipts and the estimate.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes. We accept HSA and FSA cards for sessions you pay for yourself.
What happens in the first session?
You meet your clinician for 50 minutes. You talk about what you would like from therapy, and your clinician explains how they work, how privacy works and what the next steps are. You are not asked to tell your whole story at once.
How often, and for how long?
Most people begin weekly or every other week. Your clinician sets the pace with you, and nobody promises you a number of sessions. Individual sessions are 50 minutes; couples and family sessions are 80.
Which languages can I use in session?
Between us we work in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi and Urdu. Each therapist's languages are listed beside their name. If yours is missing, ask us before you book and we will say plainly whether we can offer it.
Will my family know what I say?
No. What you say in your own sessions is private, with the limits the law sets, which we explain in writing before you start. We do not report to a parent, a partner or an in-law, even one who pays for the sessions.
Can a parent, partner or in-law join a session?
Yes, if you want them to, and only then. Some people invite a family member for one session and some never do. We talk it through with you first, and you can change your mind.
Are you licensed where I live?
Our therapists are licensed in New Jersey. For video sessions you must be in New Jersey during the session. If you are elsewhere, we will help you look for someone licensed where you live.
What is confidential, and what are the limits?
Your records are private. We share them only as the law allows, for example when someone is in immediate danger or a court orders it. Before you start we explain these limits in writing.
Do you see children or teens?
No. Sonder sees adults, 18 and over, and families that include adults. If a younger family member needs care, we will help you find a clinician who sees children.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment. You will see the full policy in writing before your first session.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. This site and our messages are not monitored around the clock, so do not wait for us to answer.
Is there a question left?
Write to us. We reply within one business day, and we do not mind a question about money.
